Your Gamblin paints have these characteristics that affect mixing:
✅ QUINACRIDONE RED ADVANTAGE: Unlike Quinacridone Red, Quinacridone Red makes CLEAN, BRIGHT oranges when mixed with yellow! This is a game-changer for your palette. Still start with small amounts, but it's much more forgiving.
Important: These are starting points, not rules. Every person's skin is unique with individual undertones, regional variations, and lighting conditions. Always observe and mix for the specific person you're painting.
Each color family below shows: Highlight (+ white), Base color, Mid-tone (more saturated), and Shadow (+ chromatic black). This gives you the complete value range for any subject.
These formulas assume you've added: Cadmium Red Light (warm red), Phthalo Blue (bright cool blue), Lemon Yellow (cool yellow), and Quinacridone Magenta (bright purple-red)
This color wheel shows the spectrum you can create with your limited palette. Note how muted the colors are compared to a standard color wheel—this creates automatic harmony!
